How to read a golf scorecard
| Row on the card | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Hole | The hole number, 1 to 18. |
| Yards / metres | The length of the hole from each set of tees, usually one coloured column per tee. |
| Par | The score a scratch golfer is expected to take on that hole. |
| Stroke index (SI) | How the holes rank in difficulty, 1 hardest to 18 easiest. It decides where you get your shots. |
| Out | Your total for holes 1 to 9. |
| In | Your total for holes 10 to 18. |
| Gross | Every shot you took, before handicap. |
| Nett | Gross minus your playing handicap. |
| Points | Stableford points, if the competition is played that way. |
Marking a card properly
- Swap cards on the first tee — you mark a partner's score, they mark yours.
- Write the gross figure for each hole as you walk off the green, not later.
- Check the Out and In totals against your partner's card before you add them up.
- Both the marker and the player sign the card before it is handed in.
- In a Stableford you only need to know the points, but the gross figure still has to be on the card.
Common questions
What is on a golf scorecard?
Every card shows the hole numbers, the yardage from each set of tees, the par for each hole and the stroke index. There are rows for each player to write their score, with an Out total for holes 1 to 9, an In total for holes 10 to 18 and a grand total.
What does stroke index mean on a scorecard?
The stroke index ranks the holes from 1 (hardest) to 18 (easiest). It decides where a handicap player receives their shots — a playing handicap of 10 gives one shot on the holes indexed 1 to 10.
Can I print a blank golf scorecard for free?

Who signs the scorecard?
In competition each player marks a playing partner's card. Both the marker and the player sign it before it is handed in, and the player is responsible for the hole-by-hole figures being correct.
