4BBB stands for four-ball better ball. Four golfers, two teams of two, everyone plays their own ball, and each side counts only its better score on each hole. If your club fixture list says 4BBB Stableford, that is the game.
The abbreviation is used heavily in South Africa, Australia and Ireland; in the UK and US the same format is usually written as "fourball" or "better ball". Same rules, different shorthand.
Reading the shorthand

How a 4BBB round plays out
- Pair up. Usually a low handicapper with a higher one, to balance the sides.
- Apply the handicap allowance — 85% of course handicap is the recommendation.
- Everyone plays their own ball for the full hole.
- Record both scores, count the better one for the side.
- Anyone out of the hole picks up — it keeps pace of play sane.
Over 18 holes a side ends with a single better-ball total. In Stableford that is a points total, and 45+ is normally in contention.
Why clubs run 4BBB so often
- It is forgiving. One partner can implode on a hole with no damage to the card.
- It levels ability. A 22-handicapper and a 4-handicapper can genuinely combine to win.
- It is sociable. Nobody plays 18 holes on their own — there is always a partner to talk to and root for.
- It scales. Ten pairings on one leaderboard works exactly the same as one.
Getting the handicaps right
This is where 4BBB competitions go wrong most often. Course handicap depends on the tees played, the slope rating and the course rating — not just a player’s index. Mixed tees within a pairing make manual maths genuinely error-prone.
